Seeking the Zen of Buying Used Cars

A few months ago, we set out to create the most user friendly used car search site on the Internet.

Last night, while we had yet to face the onslaught of today's peak hours, and in light of the intense hard work my teammates and I put into this application, I simply couldn't wait to tell the World about our first attempt at delivering on this goal.

The problem we wish to solve for consumers is quite simple in concept:
It takes too much time to find (used) cars on the Internet. Too many clicks. Too many pages. Too many forms to fill-out. Too much waiting around. It's nearly infuriating.
We'd like to bring a measure of Zen back into the online shopping experience. Build an Interface that intuitively brings tremendous power to the fingertips of prospective Used Car Buyers, letting them see more, and quickly narrow-down their choices by criteria that matter to them.

Here's an example:
"I'd like to get wheels that'll save me money. I don't have any loyalty to any make or model, perhaps a few mild preferences. I'd like a car with strong MPG for both highway and City, that'll save me serious money in these days of high gas prices. Further, the car itself must be cheap."
  1. Head over to CarsDirect.com's Used Cars Search Site.. Pick a Zipcode, and hit search for all makes and all models
  2. Scroll-down to the left, and pick "26-100" in City MPG, then pick "40-100" in Highway MPG
  3. Scroll back-up to the "Price" box, and pick "$4,000 - $12,000"
  4. In the "Sort By" row, click Price once to sort by ascending price.
  5. The winner is, at the time of this writing: A 1996 Nissan 200SX
  6. Click on the last link in the bread crumbs below the site header to bookmark your search
But now I've changed my mind:
I'm not going to drive all that much, i just want a cheap car, period!
  1. Un-check City MPG and Highway MPG. (hit the X)
  2. Un-check Price. (hit undo)
  3. Results should still be sorted by price, lo and behold, first result is a $600 1993 Toyota Tercel
  4. Click on the last link in the bread crumbs below the site header to bookmark your search
While we have reasons to believe we've got a decent product that dramatically raises the Used Cars Buying Experience bar, as previously mentioned, that bar was infuriatingly low.

Many challenges lie ahead, and we are still working on tweaking our application, however, there is only so much we can learn on our own.

We now need your feedback! Complaints, criticisms, compliments, we want to hear it all!

Your fields appear in the wrong areas of my screen. Are you usinga relative or an absolute scale in makin colmn size and placement?

Chris Holland said...

anonymous: which fields? On the search results page, right? Care to share a screen shot?

The left column's width is in pixels, positioned "absolute", within a relative container block with left padding to accomodate it.

I appreciate what you're going for here but ease of use and advanced capability are not mutually exclusive. Sure I can get a bunch of cars returned to me withminimal clicks but then I have to spend a lot more time drilling down to what's relevant than I would at say autotrader.com (no affiliation). I think it's needlesly self defeating to ommitt an advanced search option where users can specify transmision type, specific year, convertible or hard top, etc. To me a good design makes advanced functionality available to the users who want it without cluttering the UO or confusing the users who don't. Imagine you're searching for a used porsche 911 cabriolet with automatic transmission - at this site I have to wade through 153 ads to find (if I spot them all) the 5 that match my needs. This is far more troublesome than if I could have built a search based on what I wanted. At autotrader.com I get 20 results and every one is at east relevant. The more ability you give your users the more capability you give your site. Thanks. Nick.

problem #1: the number of vehicles listed when brlken down by make appears to be less than 10% of the total listed overall.
problem #2: the list of makes at the top level of used cars is different from the list if you choose from the sidebar. example: winnebagos and Smarts appear at the top-level listings, yamahas and kawasakis on the sidebar, but not viceversa.
suggestion:user-defined search radius would be nice. forex a 35 mile radius would be more use for me than a 25 or 50. for joe blow maybe a 60. or for mr geek a 3.14159 :)

Anonymous said...

i like the page the old way you bring back the ability to search 10 miles, 50,75, nation etc the drop box and were are the advance options search

Doug Lawrence said...

Hi anonymous's,

We actually do support custom defined radius, however, we didn't have time to get it into the UI.

For now, you can call it an easter egg. Just add &radius=[your radius] to the url string on the search page and you will get a search for whatever radius you choose.

However, it must be a whole number, so 3.1415... isn't going to work for Mr. Geek. And we cap it at 1,000 miles, so a 2,000 mile search is going to end up being a 75 mile search (or 25 miles for All Makes).

I'm a software engineer that designs UI's... when ever I see a UI that goes for "ease of use" and forgets the #1 REQUIREMENT of flexibility of search...it ticks me off. Dumbing down of the software is not always good. In my opinion this search engine is a huge step backwards. Try using your search engine now for the following... a 2003 porsche boxster manual transmition, national search... IMPOSSIBLE!

what happened to the ZIPCODE filter. I used to be able to look within 200 miles of my zip if I wanted, now that option is gone

Too buggy! I need to set preferences on my first search, not wait for it to load 2000+ cars. Also, it keeps crashing my browser ie 6. Also, I want to be able to search by "just added" so I don't have to see the same pieces of crap car listings that are two months old!

Once I've used the main navigation options, I would to use a text field to further reduce the results. As some of the other folks have mentioned, I have to wade through extra results which is a turn-off. I also agree that spending all the time up-front for lots of irrelevant information is a backward-design. How about only getting records after some selections have been made and "Go" clicked? Appearance-wise, the looks are slick and friendly. I like the "saved" pseudo-frame at the bottom.

It returns a larger number of choices, but that is becoming an achilles heel. Im looking for a specific engine in my search and Im having to go through each one individually to check them. But, when I go back to the previous page after checking individual listing from generated list, I have to go all the way back and generate the list again (make and model hold, year(s) do not). Plus, model years that I put in are suggestions cause Im getting newer cars outside the years I specifiy. But even with this, still prefer this over autotrader simply because there were more hits even though none were what I wanted.

I am having trouble with the new used car search layout. I select a brand/model and then a specific vehicle within. When done I have been hitting the back arrow and it kicks me out of my original search criteria. Very clumsy or is it me?

Anonymous said...

how about you fix the "see all makes"
so it will show all listings, instead
of the random %10 or so it actually does. wouldn't dream of listing my car w/ you till that was fixed.

I went to your site to check prices on a 2003 Nissan 350Z. I found your new design hard to use and not at all intuitive. I indicated the kind of car I was looking for and the year and got a bunch of Ford Focus sedans instead. You can scroll down but not up. A real step backwards from a design that was easy to use and easy to understand.

i know what i'm looking for. I want a ford ranger 4x4 or 4wd. Color doesn't matter as much. i don't care how you list it just don't make me click on every ford ranger listed to find what i want. I will just go to another site. Some of us in the boonies are still on dial-up. Click, wait, nope, back. Repeat.
Going now. bye.

What a piece of crap design! Why do I come back to this site? I have to wait for it to load 16000 car listings before I can select my search options?? Then, when I finally do get to open a listing, when I hit my "back button", it returns all 16000 listings again. Come on you guys, this is the least user friendly car search of all of them.

Needs to open filter on miles from buyer will drive farther than normal for certain vehicles. 25 mi. to 300mi.

This is the most worthless web site I have ever used. Guess what, if you click on car number 560 you get to start all over again when you get out. It also does not provide the cars you are looking for by the data input. Get a new web manager!

Your new site stinks!!!! The old one was far superior with more options and choices, such as how many miles you wanted to search for a car from your zip. Since I live in a fringe areea of your coverage, I neeed expanded territory. I used your site to buy one car, but probably never again. Back to Auto Trader

Here's what I think: you guys f*d up a really good website.

Works well .... but I could never get it to go out further than the 25mi radius default.

EVERY POST needs to be addressed/dead-on critiques...amazing that you have to be explained the mechanics of your software by users. (i.e., why not let me tell you what I'm looking for & where...up-front! or else, try the worst screen-freeze online at: CarsDirect) I got another one...why...WHY can't you let the dealerships WRITE AN AD on the vehicle listed?? (SEE: AutoTrader & Others). What little content here ('build-code' standard features...zzzzz) is Butchered by lack of spacing, punctuation, symbols. Ever heard of HTML? Wouldja try it for your auto advertisers? Do you understand what 'return' & 'back button' functions are? Is this your full-time job? I also don't care that you call your featured dealers "Trusted" (sic) either.

I hate the way you list "OPTIONS" as text Spaghetti. Do you understand customer need for side by side feaure comparision ?

I'd really like to see a filter available for fuel type. I'm looking for a Diesel-powered car so that I can use Biodiesel fuel. As it is, I have to figure out on my own (by using another used car search engine) which models offer a Diesel, search for each of those models one at a time here, and then try to use other filters (fuel economy, transmission, etc) to trick your search into returning only Diesel cars. For something like a newer VW Jetta, I have not had success in performing this search using your tool, but with Autotrader or Cars.com, I believe you will find that such a search is intuitive and effective.

There was a few things I always wanted in life, one was to go to Red Lobster, two was to meet my birth Mom who had to give me up at birth. I have been Blessed to do both. The other is to OWN a Chrysler Pacifica. You really made it easy to pull up and see the different types and prices. One thing about houses and cars, if you don't have good credit, no one is willing to give you a break so you can prove that you can be responsible. What's the use of having this at my reach and can't get it. Not because I don't have enough income, but because I either don't have enough down or have inquired about loans to much. How else can I get what I need. My husband and I don't have a car. We sold everything and came here to work in ministry, and be with my Mom. What do I do? I believe that a way will be made for me to get my dream car. I don't have to have a 2007, I think they came out in 2004 and that's good for me.

Cheryl said...

What a wonderful story. Ever thought about writing a book, or have you already. Does anyone out there know of maybe someone that may want to sell a Pacifica or that will actually do special finacing regardless of credit issues through check draft, ect.?

Hi, Added a new value add to my blog this weekend - a news widget from www.widgetmate.com. I always wanted to show latest news for my keywords in my sidebar. It was very easy with this widget. Just a small copy paste and it was done. Great indeed.

Hello. I find your blog very interesting. From the www.pissedconsumer.com I learned that Cars Direct is an Internet Brands Company. This website offers to buy new and pre-owned cars through the company and provides a huge selection of vehicles that range from Luxury Cars such as Ferrari, Maserati, Bugatti and Rolls-Rouce to SUVs and vans. I did not happen to deal with the company but the reports on the www.pissedconsumer.com are not positive.

To adjust your side mirrors the Zen way, first put your head against the driver’s side window. Adjust the mirror so the rear quarter panel just barely disappears from your field of view. Then move your head towards the center of the car – your console or gear selector is a good reference point to hover over if you have one.Repeat the adjustment for the right side mirror so that your right rear quarter panel just disappears from your field of view.

Buying a new or Used car or truck can seem overwhelming if you don't know where to begin.
smaillmusedcars.com can get you started on the right track with a convenient directory of Used Mercury Pittsburgh dealerships in and around Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
